Led by Sibusiso Mthembu, built for workshop realities

Sibusiso Mthembu founded Laser Ray Tools in 2011 after seeing how much downtime a failed cutting head or damaged lens can cost a workshop. As Managing Director, he keeps the business focused on repair work that matters in the real world: fixing fibre and CO2 laser systems, reducing delay, and making sure the right people handle each job from the first call to return to service.

He works closely with job shops, signage plants and metal fabricators that need practical support, especially when production is tight and load-shedding or delayed deliveries are already making the day harder. His approach is simple, diagnose properly, repair correctly, and keep the machine earning. That is what clients expect from us and what he insists on every time.

  • Founded in 2011 in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni
  • Supports workshops across South Africa from one service base
  • Focuses on laser uptime, not side services or distractions

Senior laser technician work that goes beyond a quick look

Johan van Rensburg, our Senior Laser Technician, handles the fault-finding and precision repair side of the work. He strips, inspects and rebuilds cutting heads, checks nozzle seats, replaces worn lenses and windows, and carries out head alignment checks after collision damage or gradual wear. When a machine has been knocking holes off-centre or cutting poorly for days, Johan is usually the person tracing the cause.

He is methodical with fibre and CO2 systems alike, and he knows the difference between a part that needs replacement and one that only needs careful cleaning or adjustment. That judgement saves clients money and time, which matters when a press brake, laser cutter or fabrication line is waiting. He also handles bench pressure tests and return to service tests, so the unit goes back ready, not half sorted.

The service counter feel, without the faff

Lerato Ndlovu keeps the service counter organised from first enquiry through to handover. She logs the issue, confirms the machine type, helps arrange collection or on-site support where needed, and keeps clients updated while repairs are in progress. For busy workshops, that clear process makes a big difference because it cuts back on guesswork and repeated calls.

She also coordinates turnaround times with the workshop team and the field technician, so the correct parts are ready before the machine arrives. It sounds small, but it saves a lot of time when a plant in Germiston, Kempton Park or Vanderbijlpark needs its head back fast. Lerato is also the person who makes sure the paperwork, notes and test results are in order, which helps if a client needs a proper record for internal maintenance.

Parts control that keeps repairs moving

Ayesha Khan manages parts and stores, which means the correct nozzle, lens, protective window or ceramic holder is available when the technician needs it. In laser repair work, the wrong part can stall a repair by a day or more, so her role is central to keeping turnaround short. She checks stock, tracks incoming parts and makes sure consumables are stored properly, especially where heat, dust and coastal humidity can affect condition.

She also helps match parts to the specific fault found during diagnosis, whether it is a worn sensor ring, a damaged gas path component or a head assembly that needs a full refresh. Her attention to detail supports reliable repairs and helps prevent repeat failures after the machine is back in production. It’s steady work, but it keeps the whole operation honest.

Field support for on-site repairs and tricky callouts

Thabo Molefe handles field service when the machine cannot come in easily or when the fault needs to be assessed on site. He visits workshops across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and surrounding industrial areas, helping clients get back up without waiting for a full strip in the bay. On site, he checks alignment, contamination, wear and damage, then decides what can be sorted there and what needs bench work.

His job often means working around production schedules, limited access, and the usual realities of a busy shop floor. He knows the pace of South African fabrication, where one machine down can hold up a whole shift. His report back to the workshop is detailed, practical and direct, so the repair plan is clear from the start.

He also helps with return to service checks after a callout, making sure the cutter is not just switched on but actually ready to cut properly again.

The office side that keeps the workshop steady

Megan Naidoo handles workshop administration and keeps the back-end work tidy. She manages records, service notes, internal follow-ups and the flow of information between the team members. In a repair business, that admin work matters because a missing note or unclear fault description can slow a job down just as much as a broken component.

She supports the team by keeping repair files current, organising handovers and making sure the client gets the right feedback once the job is complete. That means the workshop can stay focused on repairs while the admin side stays under control. It also helps when several machines are in at once and each one has its own fault, its own parts list and its own deadline.

Between the field, the bench and the stores, Megan helps the whole operation stay organised, which is why the team can keep service moving across South Africa without unnecessary delay. Simple systems, properly kept, make life a lot easier.
