Send A Head

Need a cutting head checked on the bench? Send it to Laser Ray Tools for intake guidance, careful strip down and practical repair support from Boksburg. We help workshops across South Africa get the unit packed right, logged in properly and assessed without wasting days on avoidable delays.

Send A Head

Before You Remove The Head From Service

Take the machine out of production as soon as cutting quality drops, the head has taken a knock, or you see signs such as unstable height control, burnt edges, repeated nozzle strikes or gas leaks. Running a damaged head can turn a small fault into a bigger repair, and that costs more time in the end.

If the machine is in a busy shop in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban or Cape Town, make a quick note of what happened before shutdown. That note helps the technician check the right parts first and it saves back and forth later.

  • Record the machine model and cutting head model if it is visible.
  • Note the fault, the last good cut and any collision or alarm messages.
  • Remove the head with care and keep all screws, rings and fittings together.
  • Do not continue testing if the head is misaligned or leaking gas.

How To Pack A Cutting Head For Transit

Pack the head so it arrives clean, dry and protected from impact. A lot of damage happens in transit, especially when parcels are thrown around between depots or left in the sun. A proper carton with internal padding is best. If you are sending from a coastal area, use extra protection against humidity and include a dry bag or wrapped desiccant where suitable.

Use a rigid box, bubble wrap and foam so the body cannot move. Keep optical parts separate if they have already been removed. If the head contains lenses, windows or ceramics, wrap each item on its own and label it clearly.

  • Seal the box well and avoid loose filler that shifts around.
  • Mark the parcel as fragile on the outside.
  • Include your company name, contact person and return address inside the box.
  • Use a courier that can track the parcel from Boksburg to your site or vice versa.

What To Send With The Head

Send only the items needed for diagnosis and repair. That keeps the intake clean and helps the workshop move faster, especially when loadshedding or a busy production schedule has already cut into the day. If the head came off a fibre or CO2 machine after a collision, the technician may need the nozzle, ceramic holder, sensor ring and related fittings.

Make sure the unit arrives with enough background detail to support a proper strip and inspection. If there is a recurring fault, mention whether it appears during piercing, at high speed, or only on certain material thicknesses.

  • Cutting head assembly and any removed related parts.
  • Photo of the damage if you have one.
  • Brief fault description and any recent maintenance done.
  • Return instructions if the unit must go back to a specific workshop or branch area.

What Happens In The Workshop

Once the head reaches our Boksburg base, the unit is logged in and checked for visible damage, wear and contamination. From there we carry out strip and inspection work, collision damage repair, nozzle seat restoration, lens replacement, window replacement, sensor ring service, ceramic holder change, internal cleaning, gas path service and head alignment checks as needed.

We also bench pressure test the unit and run a return to service test before it goes back. That process helps confirm that the cutting head is ready for production again, not just looking good on the bench.

On Site Or Bench Repair Options

Some heads are best repaired in the workshop, while others can be assessed on site if the fault, machine access and schedule make that the better option. For fabricators in Germiston, Kempton Park, Vanderbijlpark and the wider Ekurhuleni area, on site work can be useful when the machine is hard to remove or the line cannot stand idle for long.

For more serious wear, contamination or impact damage, bench repair is usually the cleaner choice. It gives the technician room to inspect the full assembly properly and to test it after repair without pressure from the machine bay.

  • Bench repair suits heavy wear, collision faults and internal contamination.
  • On site support suits urgent checks, quick diagnosis and removal guidance.
  • We support fibre and CO2 systems used in workshops and fabrication plants.

Who Uses This Support And Why It Matters

Job shops, signage plants and metal fabricators rely on steady laser uptime because missed cuts affect delivery dates and scrap quickly adds up. A cutting head fault can stop a whole shift, especially when the machine is already covering tight work orders. Practical repair support keeps the focus on getting the cutter back into use without unnecessary parts changes.

Laser Ray Tools has supported South African workshops since 2011, with Sibusiso Mthembu leading the business and a team built around repair, parts and field service. If you need a straight answer on whether a head is worth repairing, send it in for assessment and we will work through the options clearly.

Questions we get asked

Can I send a cutting head without the whole machine?

Yes. In most cases the cutting head can be sent on its own for bench inspection and repair. Include the fault notes and any removed related parts so the assessment is accurate.

What damage do you repair on a laser cutting head?

We handle collision damage, nozzle seat wear, lens and window replacement, sensor ring service, ceramic holder changes, internal cleaning, gas path issues and head alignment checks.

Do you support workshops outside Boksburg?

Yes. We support customers across South Africa, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Vanderbijlpark, Durban and Cape Town, with bench and on site options where suitable.
